This free Youth Mental Health First Aid course is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers and neighbors how to help adolescents (ages 12-18) who are experiencing mental health or substance abuse challenges. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who interact with young people and was created by the National Council for Behavioral Health.
The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development and teaches a five-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis or non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD) and eating disorders.
This is an 8-hour training divided into 2 days. The training will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 27 and Thursday, Feb. 28 from noon to 4pm both days.
Registration is required. Last day to register is February 20.
